WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:

# 1. Post a blog 3 times a week (M, W & F) of at least 200 words. In your blogs you could:
-describe something you learned
-explain something that surprised you
-give an update about stuff you're working on
-explain how you solved a problem
-tell a cool story

Also include images, sounds or video from your project.

# 2. Respond thoughtfully to another blogger's posts on this site. Post 1 of these response-blogs per week (200 or more words each).

Each of you is expected to contribute to this blog--even if you're working with another senior or with a group.

I'm really looking forward to following your project via your postings! Have fun!

Shaker Square Farmer's Market

Today I got up at 7:00 to help Savery and her husband at their booth at the Shaker Square Farmer's market. It was actually a ton of fun. We sold lots of meat, a bit of syrup, and most of the greens we had picked yesterday. The market is just an awesome atmosphere. It's so different that going into a grocery store or a Walmart and buying packaged food off the shelves. You get to see where the food came from and hear about the labor that went into making those bundles of cilantro or rolls of goat cheese. I've always liked going to farmers' markets, so it was really cool to be on the other side. David and I proudly told everyone who would listen that the greens were "super fresh," that we had "picked them ourselves yesterday morning." We probably annoyed some customers, but we were very proud.
We also felt very accomplished because we with my many relatives and our Hawken contacts we were able to attract even more costumers. Nic Rose bought a steak. Ms. Samet bought some cilantro. A Hawken lacrosse alumnus bought some garlic.
Of course, one of the best parts was when we got to buy food for ourselves. There is a guy who sells amazing goat cheese (and he looks just like Jim Halpert), so I bought two from him. I also got the best apple cider I've ever had in my life. Plus, I bought some sausages from Savery and Lou, and they gave us a lot of the leftover greens. My family will be eating well this week!
It was a really fun morning, and I'm looking forward to next week.

  1. Hannah, this sounds amazing. I personally have always loved the experience of going to the farmers market and how it brings a community together. There is something amazing about how tangible the entire experience is. You can buy your food right there, and get to know the people who grew what you are going to eat. I think awareness is so important, and what you are doing by drawing in the Hawken Community is amazing. Oh, and I know what goat cheese you are talking about! It's deeeeelicious. We are going to have to make dinner one of these nights with all of your fresh ingredients. I'm so looking forward to reading more about your farming experience, and make sure to start wearing lots of sunblock. It's supposed to get quite warm this week!
