As I described in my last post, I have been doing research for the firm's trust company stationed in South Dakota. While I have been learning a lot, I found that I just spent three hours in front of the computer without blinking!!! Okay, I blinked but I don't really remember it. I finished my research on trust termination about thirty minutes ago and I got to write my first interoffice memo. The memo is very exciting because it has a very official letterhead with the office's insignia in bright maroon. In my memo I described the process of trust termination, legal implications, and the responsibilities of the parties involved (trustor, trustee, and beneficiary). I finally feel like an official part of the firm completing my first research and documentation memo, but I never want to see the South Dakota Codified Laws (the laws which trust companies must abide by) EVER again. I feel like I know section 55A like it is the back of my hand.
The rest of this week looks pretty exciting. I get to meet with the mayor of Richfield on Thursday as a continuation of zoning approvals for the nursing home. I also get to delve into more investment research pertaining to the funding of the trust company. I got to see more of the operating part of the firm today by approving and choosing the different types of insurance an office needs.
Since my project is supposed to be an exploration of a future career path, I have been testing out the different roles in a firm. With my work on the Biltomore Trust Company, I am realizing instead of being an attorney at practice, I might want to look more along the lines of management with a legal background. I am really enjoying learning all the parts of this trust company.
